This Is The Plan

September 21, 2001

As we read the Bible to gain insight into God's plans and intentions, sometimes it is helpful to attempt a broader scan to gain understanding. Often we take a "micro" approach to Bible study, that is, examining a certain verse in minute detail. Nothing at all wrong with this, of course, but taking a "macro" approach can at times be just as insightful. Of course, in order to do this, we need an intimate familiarity with the Scriptures, so we can begin to see the broader trends in certain areas.

Accordingly, I'd like to attempt a "macro" view of some end-times prophecies in the book of Isaiah. See if you can identify the chapters that contain the following topics. Please note that these are not necessarily chronological in arrangement. While our orderly, Western-oriented minds are accustomed to sequential presentation of events, many times the Bible does not take that approach.

Perhaps the overall theme of the section we will examine is the conflict between the Lord and those who oppose Him, and His ultimate victory. First, the section starts off with a lengthy description of the day of the Lord's triumph, when He shakes the world and puts an end to mankind's arrogant rebellion against Him. Then it contains a brief statement describing the return of the Jewish people to their land in the end times, when the Lord has compassion on them and once again chooses them.

Next, there is a preview of a lengthy future taunt against Satan, a taunt that will be recited after his doom is sealed. Interestingly, Isaiah says Israel will take up this taunt after God gives her final relief against the pain and turmoil from her oppressors, who were incited by Satan. In conclusion of this taunt, God says that he will crush the antichrist on the mountains of Israel. He declares that His plan for the whole world has been predetermined and no one can thwart it.

Following those introductory sections that provide a summary of end-time events, Isaiah then proceeds into a series of detailed prophecies about future conflicts. First, he proclaims a prophecy against the Palestinians (Philistines), reiterating the Lord's support for Zion and pronouncing that the Palestinians will "melt away" because of their opposition to Israel.

Then comes a lengthy description of a devastating war in what is today the country of Jordan. Large numbers of fleeing, terrified refugees are described, and the passage primarily describes their lamentful flight.

In the next section, the obliteration of the city of Damascus, Syria is described, along with the ramifications for Israel in the aftermath of this destruction. For Israel, it leads to lean times during which they increasingly turn their eyes towards their Maker.

After this is a puzzling prophecy that is perhaps referring to the US. It describes large amounts of donations and assistance pouring into Israel from a certain country that fits the description of the US. These gifts are destined for the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, presumably to further the future rebuilding of God's Temple.

Finally, the next section describes civil war in Egypt. In conjunction with the war, a great fear of Israel and Israel's God falls on Egypt, with the improbable result that large numbers of Egyptians, even whole cities, will convert to worship of the true God.

You may have guessed that the chapters we've touched on are found in Isaiah 13-19. Israel's certain and unbudging return to their land, the Palestinian failure to expel them, battles and refugees on the east side of the Jordan River, the destruction of Damacus, gifts to Mount Zion from the United States, and a miraculous transformation in Egypt, all in single broad sequence -- could these Scriptures be describing events to happen in the near future? Watch and see.

"This is the plan determined for the whole world; this is the hand stretched out over all nations. For the LORD Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?" (Isaiah 14:26-27 NIV)
