The Biblical book of Lamentations, written by the prophet Jeremiah, is a book like no other. As the title indicates, it is a tale lamenting the fate of the Jewish people. What is utterly fascinating about this book is it sounds as though it were written in modern times by a man looking back on the doleful history of the Jews. Lamentations contains many startling details that coincide with the historical tragedies that have befallen the Jews.

As we listen to this book, our focus should not be primarily on the events during the time of Jeremiah, but events on a much broader scale. This book is essential for the understanding of God's long-term dealings with the descendants of Jacob.

Jeremiah describes in stark and shocking terms the scene as he looks forward into history, enabled by God to view the entire heartbreaking saga of the Jews. But even as the Lord describes the reasons why He inflicted such pain on Israel, He also reassures that nation of His great compassion and mercy in the end.

To have a Biblical view of what is happening in the world today, it is essential to understand God's long-term perspective on His plans regarding the Jewish nation. This book of judgment and hope is an essential element to gain that understanding.

If you are a person who desires to gain insight into what God is doing, do not take a casual approach to understanding the Scriptures. Make it your goal to become thoroughly acquainted with all of God's revealed truth.
